Based at APT Studios, Deptford, 2003/4 winner of The Mark Tanner Award for Sculpture, Victoria Rance graduated with a BA Honours in Fine Art from Newcastle University (1983) and an MA in Fine Art with PGcert in HE from Kingston University (2009) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a member of The London Group.
Series of work include: Priestess of the Sun, a new cult which acknowledges the power of the sun over all human life, 12,000 Grandmothers a film and installation looking back to the beginning of Homo sapiens, Thorness and the Green Man films, drawings, sculptures, paintings and textiles on the fight to prevent the breakdown of the natural world as the planet heats up; The Night Horse and The Holy Baboon allegorical tableaux dealing with political power and hierarchies using human and animal form; Sculpture to wear create a sheltering skin that protects or alters the sense of self, provoking ambivalent responses in the wearer and viewer; their forms suggest a usefulness or functionality; Otherworld small pewter sculptures and drawings about the magical, mythological relationships between humans, animals and nature; Spaces For … interactive sculptures exploring how psychic and physical space is perceived and inhabited; I Wish is an ongoing project in which Rance makes a talismanic object in response to a one to one conversation about a wish.
